Hallway/Stairs

Before I start do you call the place where you have stairs a hallway or stairs, according to my husband the little bit after my kitchen and before my bathroom counts as a hallway but I don't think it does and he thinks I can't call the stairs a hallway, anywho what do you call it? Please let me prove him wrong.

Now I have mentioned about my loft being turned into a room but after looking at the prices it is more likely going to have to wait till the end of the year so I can save up the money for it but in the mean time we are going to work on the hallway/stairs area and all of downstairs (kitchen might start in a couple of months, I am so excited!!).

Okay this was my stairs before I moved in:


Then my husband thought it would be a good idea to paint our stairs black:



So now after we both decided that we hated the black so we are onto carpet, the man is coming to give us a quote on Friday, fingers crossed, we will be able to afford it.  I thinking wool cream hard wearing one..


Okay I haven't even started revision today so I'd better get onto that...

    I'd call it stairs, not a hallway. In Finnish, hallways (käytävä) are narrow pathways connecting rooms while stairs (portaat) are... well, stairs. Then there's a porraskäytävä (stair-hallway), which is the middle piece of a block of flats connecting the floors, but I'd definitely call the stairs in the picture just stairs. *nods sagely*

    I preferred the carpeted version tbh, the black looks kind of harsh. As an idea, it's okay, but the black and white of it all makes it look cold.

    Unless you seal the paint and all that other junk it would have been a pain to keep up. I think the cream color would look really good with the hardwood at the bottom.

    I always called our stairway at the other place the stairs, not the hallway. we had the hallway at the top of them though! i would have liked to have painted ours or had carpet on them, but it had this runner thing with ridges on it and i couldn't
    those ridges made it a bitch to keep clean too!

    Yikes. The stairs don't look too good. I hope they look lovely when it's all fixed!

    Since I don't have stairs, if I did, I'd just call them stairs. I wouldn't call it a hall. We have a hall in our house but it's just a narrow passage that has doors to rooms on the sides. Stairs - definitely not a hallway!
