I wanted to talk about this topic "Are blogs too personal?" for the last couple of weeks and even more so after one of my closest friends closed down her blog due to the off-line world finding it. After going through my blog roll recently more and more blogs are becoming blogs written about a certain topic, for example, mine normally is being frugal and green which I think is a great idea and I love to see different views but then again I like to see some personal content as well, what's happening in their lives.
I started thinking whether or not my blog is too personal and I discussed with my husband and my best friend yesterday, I don't really write like I use to about the going ons in my life well not the really personal ones because unless it is out in the open then why put it on the internet where anyone can see it at the end of the day I know my blog is on the internet so it is pretty much public and yes I do go by a nickname (same one for the last 10 years) but I now have twitter and a lot of my off-line friends have twitter now so they have access to my blog, plus if you know my nickname you could pretty much just find me straight away.
I realised also I don't think I have ever refer to my husband by his name in the whole three years of being with him which is pretty impressive as I forget quite a bit that I haven't unless I have added you to facebook then you know my own name and his name, he has read my blog now and then but isn't really that interested in it unless I am talking about the money I have made from it :P My parents know of my blog, I don't think they really read it.
I really respect the ladies like Jenn and Amanda who don't hide anything and for that reason reading their blogs makes me feel like I know them better.
Anyway I am rambling and I have to eat before my driving lesson, I am curious where do you draw the line on your own blogs?

I think it depends on how much personal you want the blog to be. While mine is "personal" per se, it's not exactly 100% personal. I actually am careful about what I post on there compared to my friends-locked LJ because of my job and its unique environment . . .
ReplyDeleteNot to mention my dad reads my blog, so I am definitely not going to post up like my sex life or something on there LOL.

I think this is very subjective. I personal follow the "If you wouldn't say it in a crowded street, Don't say it on the net" philosophy. I will write about my life but I tend to omit names and places.
ReplyDeleteI have seen them used to great effect in a more intimate way however. My cousin (And she won't mind me telling you this) blogged constantly throughout the pregnancy, learning of the complications and death of her daughter, aged 30 hours.
She was very open and drew a lot of comfort from people comments all the way through. It also served a more practical purpose seeing as she lives in Amsterdam and her family are here in England. She, like you, however always used nicknames just in case.
Ultimately what you post on your blog is up to you. There is no fixed format for one (Although originally they where never intended to be personal diary they are now). It's a case of do whatever you get the most out of.

@ Luke, totally agree with you there about not saying it in a crowded street and I think that comments do bring great comfort to people during hard times.
ReplyDelete@Tara ha ha yeah! I use to LJ as well, def agree about friends-locked regarding jobs :)
personal blogs are all i read! i love to get a glimpse into someone else's life :) and its also what got me interested in blogging in the first place. i can understand not wanting to reveal important details about where you live or your name but otherwise i say blog what you want to!

I may be inclined to say yes. I don't really want people in my offline life visiting my blog. Some know I have one, but that's my place to talk about my life, the people in it, etc etc. Some things are very personal to me, and it's nice to be able to talk and debate with myself and others, that are a unbiased 3rd party.
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on how you write. Some people even have a few different blogs, one is more personal and private and the other is more general. Either way I still love having my blog. :)
